The Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics
The Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics was the first Olympics from the turn of the century and had a lot of firsts. The Sydney Games also debuted three events for the first time in the Olympics, the events were triathlon, trampoline and tae-kwon-do. (McDougall) Many of the Olympic firsts came through Olympians winning medals. Such as the Australian 4x100m swim team beating the US 4x100m swim team for the first time since the event was debuted in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.(The Sydney 2000 Olympic) In women's pole vaulting, history struck when Vala Flosadóttir became the first women ever to win a medal for Iceland.(The Sydney 2000 Olympic) The Games were also a great year for women because they can now participate in the modern pentathlon and weight lifting.(Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics)
